On account of improvements in the production of polished plate glass, the kings and princes of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries could construct not only light infused palaces, but also winter gardens and orangeries. In the nineteenth century, entire palaces were built in glass. One of the largest was the Crystal Palace in London, for the creation of which the cylinder glass method was improved to such an extent that ca. 300,000 panes, with a total surface of 84,000 m2, could be produced within a few months.
