As early as 1850, it had been attempted to draw broad sheets of glass directly from the glass mass, thus bypassing the cylinder. Molten glass, however, in just the same way as honey, pulls itself into threads when drawn out. It took another fifty years to find technical solutions that allowed the drawing of entirely even glass panes. In the Netherlands, machine drawn glass was put on the market in the 1920s. The production of window glass expanded rapidly, and glass became truly a mass-produced article.
