In 1665, Louis XIV ordered the establishment of a glassworks for flat glass of large dimensions. He desired to have much light in his enormous palaces, and hence required large glass windows.

The Manufacture des grandes glacés was founded in 1693 in St Gobain. The glass panes produced here were the largest ever made up to then.
