Heritage & Energy

31 Jan 2026

ICOMOS has published a new European directive on heritage buildings and energy efficiency, and its conclusions align closely with what Van Ruysdael has practised for more than twenty-five years.

The directive affirms that passive, reversible interventions consistently outperform technology-led renovations and that regular, attentive maintenance can reduce a building’s energy consumption by as much as 40%. The knowledge to do this well already exists; what is missing, more often than not, is the willingness to apply it.

This thinking is not isolated. It is being actively explored how Van Ruysdael can contribute to this emerging European framework.
